The mediaeval castle of Montargis has been occupied by a succession of monarchs and princes. Each owner has left his imprint, which gives the whole building a very varied appearance. Philippe Auguste used his architects' expertise to build one of his great cylindrical donjons (fortified towers) there. The vast Gothic building comprising the great hall of the castle was remarkable. Take advantage of the guided tour offered by the town council in order to discover Montargis castle, its postern gateway, its cellars and its chapel.
Montargis marina is an idyllic place to spend time at in the heart of the town, and it's close to the shops and restaurants where you can enjoy the local gastronomy. There are 12 fully equipped moorings!
The Musée du Gâtinais (Gâtinais museum) has displays of many prehistoric and Gallo-Roman objects from the local area which were mainly derived from the important Aquis Segeste archaeological site at Sceaux-en-Gâtinais. The collections of Egyptian artefacts (in particular two sarcophaguses dating from the Third Intermediate Period which come from the Theban Necropolis) and also Greek artefacts round off the collections which are linked to the Ancient World. The museum is in a former 15th century tannery and it also displays a range of works illustrating the history of the town of Montargis.
